What makes a robust L&D strategy in 2021?
This year in particular has shown how quickly and profoundly the structure of professional development can change. New forms of learning emerge (AI in learning platforms). Existing forms gain (e-learnings, video tutorials or webinars) or lose importance (classroom training).
A robust Learning & Development strategy is therefore immensely important.
But how do you put such a strategy together?
The first step is to lay a foundation with the following elements:
- Your L&D approaches (formats) need to be tailored to target audiences and learning objectives.
- The learning culture in an organisation determines the paths and prioritisation of learning.
By bringing these together with the corporate strategy and its objectives, first individual learning paths and then the Learning & Development strategy are shaped.

Flexibility is key for a strong L&D strategy
It is always important to be able to adapt flexibly to changing environments. Covid-19, for example, forced many organisations – like ours – to enable their staff to work from home. As a result, working hours have often become more flexible, for example, in order to balance childcare and working from home. Also global companies often have remote workforces with employees working in different time zones. This makes synchronous communication like a classroom training or a webinar sometimes difficult. E-learnings and online tutorials are a excellent way to make training independent of time and place. Additionally, employees can use e-learning courses as a reference tool and view it again as needed (just in time).
The platform solution is also part of the L&D strategy. Depending on the needs and learning culture in the company, it can provide training, enable bookings even for non-electronic formats, guide employees’ learning or enable the upload of user-generated content or ideas.
